Stories That Must Be Heard
A concert of two bold and breathtaking works from Australian composer Chloé Charody, presented at Melbourne Recital Centre on 17th August.
This transformative concert weaves classical music and circus into a single, spellbinding genre, while illuminating refugee experiences and amplifying the voices of those silenced by suffering and injustice.
PROGRAM
The first work, song cycle TRUTH IN THE CAGE, uses seven poems from Mohammad Ali Maleki’s poetry collection of the same name. Maleki, an Iranian refugee, was imprisoned on Manus Island for seven years, and then two years in a Brisbane detention centre, before finally being granted refugee status in Australia. This collection of poetry was written while he was inside Manus Prison, and reflect on his treatment in Australia’s detention system. Maleki now lives in Brisbane, where he continues to write poetry.
“You can find my whole life in my poems like a letter to God” - Mohammad Ali Maleki

Limbo: sonata for acrobatic violin
The second work, LIMBO is a new violin sonata by Chloé Charody written specifically for the unique acrobatic skill set of violin virtuoso Sonja Schebeck. Sonja partners acrobat Josh Frazer in this ground-breaking interdisciplinary duet to tell a poignant narrative through dynamic partner acrobatics, duo unicycle and cyr wheel, completely embracing circus and classical music in one captivating world.
LIMBO is set at Melbourne Park Hotel, Australia in 2021, a time when many refugees were detained indefinitely, some having been incarcerated by the Australian Government for up to 9 years. If we think of what it was like to be stuck inside for several months due to the pandemic, imagine what it would feel like after 9 years. The sonata roller coasts through emotions of anger, frustration, fantasy & escape, exploding with one of the greatest weapons against oppression: hope.
Through the character of ‘Amin’, we explore 7 different states of mind that a person would go through, when their life is in Limbo:
1. ‘Limbo’ Violin Caprice - Amin is alone in a hotel room. 5 years inside this room, 9 years in detention. The oppressive force that keeps Amin trapped is aggressive & unrelenting.
2. Lament for a Life Lost in Limbo - Amin laments for 9 years of their life, and so many other lives, that have been lost in limbo.
3. Dance of the Clowns - Back-pedaling and running in circles, we enter the absurd world of politicians and decision makers, where the lives of refugees are manipulated at will.
4. Song for the Moon - Looking out of the hotel window, Amin feels warmed by the presence of the moon - comforting, non-discriminate and peaceful. The moon sends Amin into a hypnotic state where Amin dreams of freedom.
5. Lunacy - Amin snaps back to reality. The oppressive force that keeps Amin trapped is now even greater and sends Amin into a state of mental despair. Amin, though bordering on insanity, starts to fight back.
6. Soliloquy - Amin enters a realm of mystery - a space of internal exploration where they question the state of their existence in an ambivalent state of limbo.
7. The Lost World - In a world where greed, oppression and injustice dominate, it is hard to see how a life that is so lost can recover. However, Amin holds one of the most powerful weapons against oppression - hope.
The concert runs for approximately 75 minutes without an interval
